Tropical Depression Forms Off Florida Coast

May Become T.S. Arthur on Tuesday

The first tropical depression of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane season formed just off the coast of Florida late Monday night.

The depression was drifting southwestward at around 2 miles per hour and was located about 105 miles east/southeast of Cape Canveral and 210 miles north/northwest of the Northwestern Bahamas.

The NHC issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the east coast of Florida from Fort Pierce to just south of Flagler Beach. No watches were issued for the South Florida area.

On the current forecast track, the Depression is expected to remain offshore and move east of Florida during the next 48 hours and pass northeastern Florida by Wednesday night.

Tropical Depression 1 has maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour with gusts to 45 miles per hour. The NHC said it expects the system to become a Tropical Storm on Tuesday.

If the system becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Arthur.
